Summary/Abstract: On the 31st of December 1999, Panama gained full control of the Panama Canal for the first time in its history. After many years of functioning on the periphery of the world economy, it is currently experiencing a significant economic revival. According to the World Bank data, in 2011 the gross domestic product of the country increased by 10.6%. It was the highest growth rate in Latin America and one of the highest in the world. Growing economy is an opportunity to overcome the development barriers of the country, both in economic and social fields. This article aims to analyze factors affecting economic growth of the country and to answer the question whether Panama uses the opportunity to introduce positive changes in the most vulnerable areas of the economy, which in turn can get it on the path of sustainable economic development.
