Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to organize the actual knowledge on social capital and to list different proposals for measurement and typology of this phenomeneon. The article presents basic concepts developed since 1916 by scientist from Polish and foreign research centers. The main line is drawn between the bridging and bonding types of social capital. The second part of the article is devoted to identyfing relations between the desribed phenomenon and the socio-economic development. Further, the relations bewtween functioning of the stste and the social capital are analyzed by juxtaposing the former with either excess or shortage of the bridging capital. Thus, four simplified images of the social reality are derived: exclusion, welfare, conflict and copying.
