Summary/Abstract: Gender in Portuguese is a grammatical category that has been poorly understood so far, despite four centuries of study. Classifier roots in portuguese sign language (LGP) are a topic that has not yet been studied. These shortcomings from linguistics are but one of many obstacles which teachers of deaf children and youngsters deal with on a daily basis in order to make work successfully a bilingual program of education. We hope that our contribution to solving these two grammatical problems might be of interest to both linguists and teachers of the deaf.
