Summary/Abstract: Russian and Bulgarian wedding laments are given a comparative-typological analysis in this article. The relationship between wedding laments and ritual – in Northern Great Russia, Southern Russia and Bulgaria, is traced; differences and features in common being noted. Both kinds of wedding laments – ritual and lyrical (the imagery) are represented in Russian as well as in Bulgarian wedding folklore. The comparative thematic analysis shows the presence of similar themes: the bride’s farewell to her family and friends, the strange home, the strange place, etc. Certain differences are also noted. In respect of their dimensions Southern Russian and Bulgarian laments have more in common, and they are shorter than Northern Great Russian ones. The common themes found in the wedding laments and the wedding lyrical songs on the one hand, and the small quantity of texts in Southern Russia and Bulgaria, on the other hand, allow the supposition that the wedding laments did not develop further, because they were displaced by wedding lyrical songs which treated the same themes.
