Summary/Abstract: The paper attempts to answer the questions of what the range of tautological derivation is, and whether synchronic word formation actually requires the term at all. Most derivatives which are considered to be tautological, are as a matter of fact formations with formatives in a pragmatic function. Only those derivatives which are identical with their bases with respect to their semantic, pragmatic and collocational characteristics, do feature purely structural formatives. However, such formations are very few. The notion of tautology can also be applied to – quite numerous in Polish – word-formational doublets, i.e. to mutually equivalent derivatives with a common base (siniak – siniec, córunia – córeńka, recytacja – recytowanie). Here, however, tautology is not a function of the formative, but that of formation, for it only emerges in the relation between the derivatives. Nonetheless, tautological derivatives and word-formational doublets can be interpreted pragmatically, because the existence of synonyms entails a choice between linguistic alternatives, and that is the domain of stylistics.
