Summary/Abstract: Political communication is a discipline still in search of a conceptual and methodological identity, unlike sociology, which had consistent conceptual scaffolding; political communication still faces a series of conceptual limitations. In this article, we review both classical and recent empirical research dedicated to political communication, arguing for a broader definition of effects and tracing recent social and technological developments brought by new media. This article also features some of the recently proposed interactive models of political communication, more complex than the traditional hypodermic approach.
