Summary/Abstract: Intonation in Lithuanian has a great functional potential and thus it is a powerful means used to express a variety of meanings and to add an emotional charge to a text. However, its applicability is considerably restricted in writing as it is impossible to express the sound diversity of an oral text by graphic sings. To partly compensate for it, the authors make use of other means, like comments on the character's actions, thoughts and feelings, or certain words and expressions which point to a concrete intonation. The analyzed Lithuanian literary texts differ in the range of means used to reflect a definite intonation. That is to say, the authors do not equally consider all the aspects of an oral text.
