Prolegomena to Henri Michaux’s Abandonment/Historical Commitment

Summary/Abstract: La relation d’Henri Michaux avec l’Histoire est complexe et sa posture de « poète de guerre », contradictoire. Anhistorique ou infrahistorique, le regard qu’il pose sur le monde pendant la Seconde guerre mondiale se détache d’un présent qui avale passé et avenir et Michaux voit dans la guerre réelle une autre guerre qui est exclusivement affaire d’imagination. L’étude se concentre, d’abord, sur le comment de l’engagement qui fait que le poète le plus désengagé est perçu, par une partie de ses contemporains, comme « héraut de son temps ». Ensuite, l’analyse met en discussion le pourquoi de son implication dans l’Histoire. Le paradoxe de l’engagement formulé par Maurice Blanchot en 1945 sera le point de départ de l’analyse d’une forme particulière de résistance poétique déclenchée, chez Michaux, par la prise de conscience de l’échec du déplacement/dégagement. Henri Michaux has a complex relationship with History and his position as « war poet » is contradictory. His unhistorical or infrahistorical look at the world at the time of World War II stands out from a present that swallows past and future and Michaux sees, within the real war, another war which is exclusively a matter of imagination. The study focuses, first, on the analysis of the means of realization of the commitment that makes that the most disengaged poet is perceived by some of his contemporaries as "herald of his time". Then we approach the reason for his involvement in history. The paradox of the commitment formulated by Maurice Blanchot in 1945 will be the starting point for the analysis of a particular form of poetic resistance triggered by the realization of the failure of the déplacement/dégagement.
