Tragedy in Shatoi

Summary/Abstract: A fragment from Anna Politkovskaia’s book “Tchetchenie – le deshonneur russe”. The reportage won the First Prize at the International Competition “Lettre Ulysses Award for the Art of Reportage”, Berlin 2003. Starting from the assassination of several Tchetchnian civilians by the GRU troupes in the Shatov district in January 2002, the author reconstitutes mechanisms, tactics and the specific climate of a war in which such horrors are meant to feed the war flame and where special detachments lf the Russian secret service consider themselves above the law.
