Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the text properties of Hrabal’s work, which is very varied (e.g. in terms of genre). Style has a very important function for his writing. Author refl ects this issue quite often in his work, he professes the concept of style of Roland Barthes: he sees style as something physiological, biological. Hrabal’s texts are full of intertextual connections, too. On one hand, his work is characterized by citations or allusions to world literature, on the other side Hrabal listens to the speech of ordinary people and rewrites it. In his work, intermediality is equally important: Hrabal often invokes personalities, works, methods, and genres of art, music or film in confrontation with his own writing. His texts tend to disturb genre stereotypes, the narrative structure of his epic works is weakened. Hrabal‘s work undermines not only the communist discourse with its hierarchy of values, but also enters critical dialogue with the traditional discourse of Western culture in general.
