Summary/Abstract: Musical education places a hard load on students. In order to be successful one needs to start learning music long before beginning schooling. Learning music means spending many hours on training, along with normal school education. So achieving success in musical education calls for a strong motivation, as well as for effective cognitive and metacognitive strategies. Two studies were conducted in order to gain insight into the learning styles of students from musical higher education. In both studies the Polish adaptation of Jan Vermunt’s “Inventory of Learning Styles” was used, and data concerning study success were gathered. In the first study with students from an academy of music and a university of educational sciences, differences were found in the following subscales: Personally Interested, Construction of Knowledge, Self-regulation of Learning Content (higher results in musical education), and Certificate Directed (higher results in educational sciences). In the second study, with students from an academy of music and a university institute of musicology, differences concerned the following subscales: Deep Processing and Construction of Knowledge, with higher results obtained by musicology students. Relations between learning styles and achievements were differentiated in both studies and between groups. The discussion is focused on the influence of long-term training in music, along with normal schooling, on the development of learning styles, and on the role of the educational context in molding behaviors best adapted to its requirements.
