Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the typology of the floral still life of the Bulgarian artist of German descent Anna Hen-Yosifova (1872-1931). The cult of flowers during the Belle Époque comes as the result of the preserved during the centuries admiration as well as the new attitude to total decorativeness, to their hidden symbolic language which expressed in a delicate and indirect way sentimental feelings and moods. The author examines the connotations of the different kind of flowers by connecting them with the artist’s environment, with literary spirits of the epoch, with the vision of the Secession as the dominant and unifying style at that time. By analyzing the roses, chrysanthemums, lilacs, irises, gladiolus, violets, bouquets of flowers of the filed the author touches upon their individual symbolism. Parallels are made with the tradition of the Dutch school of painting, verses by Bulgarian poets – symbolists and some circumstances connected with the creation of the paintings and the artist.
