Summary/Abstract: Political sociology emerged during the long process of dissolution of po litical philosophy into sociological theory of politics. Its earliest roots go back to republican theories in time of Renaissance and early Modern ism. Contemporary debates about the subject matter of political sociol ogy differently reply to the question what defines the theoretical identity of political sociology: understanding that political sociology is sociology of state, sociology of power, sociology of government, sociology of so cial movements, sociology of social changes, sociology of democracy, sociology of political behaviour, sociology of conflicts, sociology of elit es, sociology of masses, sociology of globalization. The author opts for understanding that the identity of political sociology expresses the rela tion of society and politics in the best manner. The final part of the text deals with the issue of academic status of political sociology
