Summary/Abstract: "In this paper I shall describe the two spheres that are present in anyone’s life: public and private. At the semantic level they are antonyms. Nevertheless, it seems interesting to follow the development of these words diachronically, to pursue the evolution of their usage. The concept of “private life”, in its contemporary meaning, appeared only in the 19th century. The concept is understood to cover the area of the intimate where one can live without the interference of others; it is the ideal topos in which everybody feels protected from society’s “eyes”.
