Short Description
Gender Studies is to our knowledge the only journal of its kind published in the Romanian academe, its main objective being that of spanning the conceptual and practical gaps between academes and communities, academic studies and NGO initiatives, engendering a dynamic and lively framework for exchanges, intersections, challenges and critiques of any received wisdom, of taken-for-grantedness, of intellectual complacency and of what is undeniably prevalent in most institutes of higher education in Romania to date: conservative correctness. The English Language and Literature Department of The Faculty of Letters at the University of the West Timisoara has organized over the last fifteen years the British and American Studies Conferences. Over the last five years the Gender Section became one of the most prominent developments within the format of the BAS events. The Gender Section grew from year to year not only in the amount of papers presented but also in the high quality and liveliness of professional debates and networking in the field. The journal reflects to a large extent the breadth and depth of these yearly events. The first issue of the journal - published in 2002 - consecrated a new institutional nucleus in our university: The Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies under whose aegis the first MA programme in gender studies at our university was set up two years ago.
