Summary/Abstract: Khaled Hosseini’s novel A Thousand Splendid Suns spans two decades of Afghan history, from the Soviet rule in the 1970s to the Talibans’ rise to power in the 1990s, seen through the eyes of two women. The paper deals with the female characters’ struggle to escape subordination imposed upon them by the politics and culture of Afghanistan.
