Summary/Abstract: In his book Consumer Culture and Modernity Slater asserts that the appropriate framework of discussion of consumer culture is modernity: issues central to consumer culture are deeply interwoven with interpretations of the experience and processes of modernity itself. The article presented in this block is from Chapter One of the book, and gives an excellent overview of the modern characteristics along which theorists have identified consumer culture. The aim of the review is not a definition of consumer culture, rather the examination of the dilemmas related to the modern social phenomena and processes that have been discussed under the concept, and whose different interpretations have led to the condemnation or the celebration of consumer culture.
