Summary/Abstract: Bauman presents the key distinctive characteristics that distinguish consumer society from the earlier producer society. Th e process he considers to be at the heart of this change is that consumer society engages its members primarily as consumers, it is through the role of the consumer that participation in society takes place. Former identities based on work and the work ethic as a major force of social integration are replaced by flexible consumption-based identities and aesthetics. The article reviews the causes and consequences of the change in the context of identity, the relationship to work and consumption and poverty.
