Summary/Abstract: The article traces the historical changes of the concept of consumer society. Fine and Leopold point out that the concept is far from being uniform, theories on its starting point, mechanisms, causes, the people involved and the contexts of its discussion have varied widely according to its different interpretations. In their view, the disagreement is due to the fact that the notion of ‘consumption’ includes very different acts that cannot be analysed within the same conceptual framework. Th e economist authors put forward the ‘system of provision’ approach as a solution, which is based on the assumption that distinct mechanisms structure different commodities, therefore consumption is best studied as part of these particular vertical systems of production and consumption.
