Summary/Abstract: Supposedly devoid of sexual desires, women in the Victorian period were confined to the private sphere and had to live in a male-oriented society, where passion was considered deviant and thoughts of sexuality would cause insanity. In “Jude the Obscure” Hardy attacked the institution of marriage while presenting a sexually frightened woman embodied by Sue Bridehead.
