Summary/Abstract: On October 10, 2008, Faculty of History of Vilnius pedagogical university hosted a national scientific conference „The Role of the Constitution of May 3, 1791, in Lithuania‘s History and Its Historical Culture“. The conference aimed to draw the attention of scientific society to this exceptionally important even in Lithuania‘s history. The conference was attended by numerous presenters who represented six institutions dealing with research in the science of history. The conference also revealed that the topic of the Constitution of May 3,1791, is relevant both for Lithuania’s political history in particular and for society’s historical culture in general. Circumstances of its preparation and adoption, historical context, interpretation of its content and evaluation of both its details and essential issues raise many controversial questions and set new research tasks for those investigators who are interested in the history of the 18th century.
