Summary/Abstract: The journal of religious sciences SOTER (running from 1924, and resumed in 1999) is the only publication in Lithuania with a regular rubric of Christian Culture and Religious Studies which publishes interesting and topical research articles on various subjects of Catholic religious music. In the 28 volumes published since 1999, 41 articles on the said subjects appeared. They can be divided into several groups: ethnomusicological (with the issues of the studies of the Lithuanian Calvaries – Stations of the Cross included); the activity of Lithuanian musicians in exile; professional composing of religious music; religious music of the region of Klaipėda; Lithuania hymnal and hymn singing tradition; the relationship of the worldview and music writing of European composers, etc. The articles on the subjects of ethnomusicology focus on the relationship of ethnic music with the images of God and Christ’s Cross in it, the issues of specific terminology, the nature of instrumental music making (playing the kanklės) in Christian denominations of the Baltic nations, as well as the interrelationship and differences of Lithuanian, Polish, and Latvian Catholic ethnic musical culture. The study of devotional practices in SOTER journals is enriched by the Lithuanian folklore studies of Catholic traditions. The research in specific terminology makes a significant contribution to the ethnomusicological theme in the SOTER publications. The said subjects have mainly been studied by prof. habil. dr. A. Motuzas, prof. habil. dr. R. Apanavičius, prof. dr. R. Sliužinskas, and Rev. S. Stumbras. More than one article of prof. dr. D. Petrauskaitė, assoc. prof. dr. M. Kazakevičienė, and E. Mažintas discuss the activities and compositions of Lithuanian musicians in exile in the USA. Several articles deal with professional composition of religious music. The article of prof. dr. Gražina Daunoravičienė on the specificity of the genre of motet attracts by its deep insights. The subject of the ancient church music is developed by the researcher A. Versekėnaitė who highlights the emergence of the sequence of Dies Irae and the possibilities and contexts of its functioning. On the occasion of commemoration of St. Casimir’s 550th birth anniversary, several articles on musical compositions devoted to the Saint appeared (by assoc. prof. dr. Milda Kazakevičienė, prof. dr. Daiva Kšanienė, assoc. prof. dr. Regimantas Gudelis, and prof. dr. Danutė Petrauskaitė). The subject of Catholic Church music in Klaipėda region has been researched by prof. dr. D. Kšanienė. She identified the place of Catholic music in Klaipėda region where the Evangelical Lutheran denomination had been dominating.
