Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the myth of the “five centuries of outrage” which marks the time of Ottoman rule on Bulgarian territory. The author has looked for the birth of the myth of perpetual outrage in what he has called the “Kurdjali” generation: one that was subject to continuous stress, persecution and insecurity. The generations raised by this one, who were the builders of National Revival society, found confirmation of that myth in the outrages at the time of the April uprising. The author outlines that a comprehensive academic study of the “Kurdjali” period shall free Bulgarian historiography from the romantic National Revival attitudes.
