Summary/Abstract: The well-known French student of Bulgarian history, Bernard Lory, believes that the great events that shook late eighteenth-century Europe, and above all the French Revolution, found response in all the Balkan provinces of the Ottoman empire but Bulgaria. The anarchy caused by the Kurdjalis prevented Bulgarians from adopting the French revolutionary ideology. At the same time, the Kurdjalis' atrocities left such a lasting impression on the Bulgarian mind that even modern Bulgarians tend to identify the entire five-hundred-year history of the Ottoman rule with the bloodshed and violence of the Kurdjali period. However, the analysis of Rumelia's history in the period under discussion points at the occurrence of a number of phenomena, which link Bulgaria with the intellectual and political climate of the contemporary Western Europe. Contrary to what Lory believes, Bulgarians were not isolated from the processes taking place in the European continent. Lory's misconception of Bulgaria's history of the above-mentioned time period is due to his inadequate acquaintance with the bulk of modern Bulgarian studies dedicated to these problems.
