Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the artistic and creative processes that took place at "the turn of the century" and the younger Balkan generations' radical efforts to establish new aesthetic criteria, new Balkan stereotypes and philosophical outlook. The old historical models based on the inter-action of several cultural systems, i. e., the Roman Catholic, the East Orthodox and the Islamic one, were quickly replaced by new models. By exploring the aesthetic changes which occurred as a result of the above-mentioned process, the author has succeeded in tracing the routes of penetration of European and non-European ideas into Southeast European culture. More than that, these changes occurred against a specific theoretical background which had originated in the century-old contacts of different civilizations. Aesthetics can, therefore, be studied only in the context of the specific spiritual and historical development of Southeastern Europe, whose ideas and conceptual history have not always been a mirror reflection of the ideas of the "Other Europe".
