Summary/Abstract: The present study is about the filmic acoustical being, or acousmêtre, its specificity to the cinematic medium, its characteristics gained through the use of sound, and the influence it has over the film’s characters and narrative. This paper focuses primarily on the notion of de-acousmatization, as theorized by Michel Chion, and whether or not the acousmêtre loses its powers upon entering the space of the screen. For this purpose, I shall introduce to this discussion the 2002 film Phone Booth (Dir. Joel Schumacher), which presents an acoustical being as main character.
