Romanian Verbs Adapted to the Ukrainian Language System

Summary/Abstract: The current material focuses on the verb as grammatical category mainly because in several instances we have identified a series of Romanian verbs adapted to the Ukrainian language system in the northern historic part of the Maramures County, namely in the area of the village Poienile de sub Munte. This situation appears when communities are bilingual (diglossic, according to the European concept), a situation in which Ukrainian speakers, using both Ukrainian and Romanian, knowingly or unknowingly adapt a series of Romanian words to their maternal language – Ukrainian. These linguistic crossovers take place both ways, and are mainly determined by the socio-cultural contacts between the two populations, speaking two different languages.
