Agriculture – An Important Economic Sector for Romania: Analysis and Possible Development

Summary/Abstract: As a south-east European country, Romania, with its capital in Bucharest, is among those countries which, together with Bulgaria, Slovakia, Lithuania and Latvia, will be EU member-candidates1 in the second expansion round. At this moment, the geographical location of Romania has the following features: it has a direct border with the EU in the West, because Hungary was included in the first EU wave of expansion; after the second wave of accession, Romania will have another direct border with EU, in the South, with Bulgaria; to the north-east and south-west there are borders with Ukraine, Moldavia and Yugoslavia, which are not at present considered for EU accession; to the south-east, there is the Black Sea with the most important trading port at Constanţa; and on the southern border there is the shipping route of the Danube. Romania is a country whose agricultural potential is of interest to the international public, resulting partly from the very high quality of the soil and favourable climatic circumstances. This article provides an overview of the Romanian economy and the important contribution of its agrarian sector, and devotes time to the question: what development opportunities are there for Romanian agriculture?
