Summary/Abstract: The writer of great talent, Mateiu I. Caragiale, who left us a very important literary work, mainly represented by his novel Craii de Curtea-Veche (The Princes of the Old – Court), had a powerful attraction towards the past, his “precious past” as he states in the short story Remember. If we rightly can assert about Mateiu I. Caragiale that he was a “painter-writer” or a “musician-poet”, we could also state that he was also a historian who was very passionate about the past, owing to his profound knowledge universal and Romanian history, which can be felt both in his novels and poems, his interests in heraldry and genealogy. He was the “heraldrist sonneteer”, as Eugen Lovinescu characterized him.
