Summary/Abstract: In the period of global economic crises the threat of bankruptcy of enterprises of many sectors of economy has increased. The main purpose of this article was to point out a mechanism of bankruptcy in food industry, taking into account the main reasons for this phenomenon. The author concentrated on the mechanism and the trajectory of bankruptcy case based on Argenti’s method. Moreover, the most frequently occurred reasons for bankruptcy of companies, both external and internal were presented. Taking into account trustees in bankruptcy opinions it is worth emphasizing that there were the following main reasons for bankruptcy in food sector: internal ones in the financial and operational area, namely lack of financial liquidity and weak management, then capital and last but not least market reasons.
