Summary/Abstract: The authors concentrate on the factors that complicate the process of transition of Slovakia from an authoritarian socialist state regime towards a liberal democracy. The paper concentrates predominantly on the evaluation of the level of congruency of both mass and elite political subcultures with political structure in Slovakia. The authors claim that both mass and elite political subcultures are resistant to profound changes and thus, the .domestication. of civic type of political culture is rather impossible in a short-term perspective. Therefore, political culture in Slovakia will keep some .domestic specificities. based on different socio-political practices even after joining NATO and the European Union.
