The translation of proper names in the novel Amintiri din copilarie (‘Recollections of Childhood’) by Ion Creanga

Summary/Abstract: Any translation needs to take into account the cultural factor in its ambivalence: both the culture of the source language and that of the target language. Translating proper nouns for people is even harder and cultural background plays an even bigger role. The present work illustrates how proper names from Creangă’s novel have been translated into Italian and English and also the translation strategies involved in the process.
