Summary/Abstract: Man is doomed to face the burden of his mortality. He always has to confront an undetermined and open future that ends in death. Death as well as dying is something nobody can do for you. Thus man must understand that there is he and there is his death. Commonness of death made it the subject of research of various branches of science. Among them, philosophy, that attempts to answer the basic questions intriguing man, certainly plays a significant part. The present article includes views of the most important philosophers of different epochs and we will present them in an encyclopedic way their opinions on the following subjects: 1) understanding of death, 2) attitudes towards dying and death and 3) conceptions of the life after death.
