The Transformations of a Scandal

Summary/Abstract: Theodor Fontane, a German writer from the 19th century, uses in many of his novels real affairs, which were discussed by his contemporaries as public scandals. in the following paper the attention is focused on three novels: “L’Adultera”, Graf Petöfy” and “Effi Briest”, the aim is to explore what happens with the scandalous content in the literary text. The author of the written stories drifts away from the particular events, he disarms the scandalous moments and looks for the hidden scandals in the manners and habits of his time. in their literary variant the scandals itself are going to be a scandal.
