Summary/Abstract: In the novels of the Austrian writer Joseph Roth a registry of distinct masculinities can be realized in their connection to and dependence on the hegemonial military masculinity, inherited from the nineteenth century. The study is discussing some fundamental thesis of the men’s studies and starts with the later and most famous novels of Roth – Radetzky March (1932) and The Emperor’s Tomb (1938) – in which the social and national conditioned, differentiated treatment of the military masculinity till the war can be observed and returns in a second step to the novels of the 20s, which thematize the crisis of masculinity after the war also as an effect of gender on the biological body.
