Summary/Abstract: Theodoricus Monachus’ Historia de antiquitate regum Norwagiensium from (most likely) 1170s is one of the earliest Norwegian chronicles. It is in a way also a unique one, built not on the traditional native sources, narratives and attitudes (as are the sagas, but – partly – also some other chronicles), but on the European Christian models. This article lists Theodoricus’ sources, but more importantly, explains their use. One of the interesting features of the chronicle is also the fact that Theodoricus does not describe his own times, finishing the chronicle with the events of early twelfth century. Or, at least he claims to. In fact, as can be shown on some few stories and metaphors in his work, he is describing his own times indirectly, which makes him also a unique author among the contemporaries in Scandinavia.
