Summary/Abstract: The only copy of a letter of Bernard of Clairvaux in which he appealed for a Crusade against pagan Slavs was preserved in Olomouc. Most likely it arrived in Olomouc in connection with the presence of the bishop of Olomouc Heinrich Zdík in this Crusade. The original letter was lost but its copy is preserved in the Codex 177 from the fourteenth century in the Chapter library (today in the Olomouc branch of the Regional Archive in Opava). According to Bernard’s conception the Crusades’ aim was either to subjugate the pagans or annihilate them. This conception brought to its end the thousand-year long missionary activities during which majority of European inhabitants were won for Christianity. Bernard’s idea inspired the Crusades and wars of conquest in Europe until the fourteenth century.
