The Emergence of Solidarity on the Coast of Poland in Light of Selected Social Movement Theories

Summary/Abstract: This article examines the ideas most commonly put forward to explain the emergence of the Solidarity social movement on the Coast of Poland from the perspective of social movement theories. Focusing on „grand” theories, namely the ones of new social movements and resource mobilization, it discusses their strengths and weaknesses, indicating at the same time the reasons why none of them is fully appropriate to explain the emergence of Solidarity.
