Summary/Abstract: The modern image of Upper Silesia was formed in the nineteenth century, as a result of the Industrial Revolution, which led to the creation of new urban centers. Upper Silesia is called “cultural border region”, formed by the merging of cultures, countries, under whose jurisdiction the region was. The region is inhabited by people of different national options. Silesian minority issue appeared in the public debate after the overthrow of the Communist regime in 1989. This problem has gained in importance after the census in 2002, in which more than 170,000 inhabitants declared Silesian nationality. The study shows that the vast majority of Poles doesn’t like Silesians. This is due to the perception of Poland as a one-nation state and shaping the cultural image of the Pole, which automatically leads to the rejection of diversity. The perception of Silesians in other Polish regions can also be affected by Silesian Autonomy Movement (Ruch Autonomii Śląska) activities, which often are referred to as a breakaway.
