Summary/Abstract: One of the key effects of the political transformation initiated in 1989 was to grant citizens the right to freedom of association and the right to express their own national and ethnic identity. This resulted in the emergence of the problem of national and ethnic minorities in the public debate. The growth of sense of national and ethnic identity among Silesians had an impact on the Polish census of 2011 in which almost 850 000 Polish citizens claimed the Silesian nationality. Significant differences in electoral preferences between the Silesian nationality and the national minorities were shown in the parliamentary elections in 2015. As far the national minorities, the national identity is the key determinant of electoral behavior, which is manifested in the low support of the Christian-conservative right wing, the exemplification of which in the last election was the Law and Justice. Differentiation of the election results in the area of Upper Silesia proves that the Silesian national and ethnic identity is not the factor conditioning the electoral preferences.
