The differences in the use of the European Union funds in the centre − peripheries system

Summary/Abstract: According to the concept of exogenous development of peripheral regions and due to their insufficient own resources, their development depends on external funds transfer. The article discusses the evaluation of differentiation of the EU funds used by local municipalities. The analysis was carried out using a division into center and periphery. The results of this study indicate a lower use of structural funds by the periphery of the region. Municipalities located closer to the center are stronger economically and more predestined to carry out expensive investment projects that require a greater contribution from local government budgets. Peripherals wanting to compete with the central regions need more actively reach out for structural funds.
