New Discoveries in the Lithuanian Émigrés Archives

Summary/Abstract: In May – August, 2008, prof. J. Skirius, for scientific purposes, visited and worked in the World Lithuanian archives in Chicago and American Lithuanian cultural archive in Putnam. The largest part of the research time was spent in the World Lithuanian archives, supervised by the Lithuanian Research and Study Centre; the scholar focussed on Leonardas Šimutis’ archival studies. In the second largest Lithuanian American Cultural archive, based in the state of Connecticut, the professor researched and analysed the archives of the former honorary consul in Boston, lawyer Antanas Osvaldas Šalna and of his wife, lawyer Zuzana Šalnienė. The scholar also researched the archive of Juozas O. Širvydas, editor of the Lithuanian émigrés, and of his son Vytautas Širvydas, which contains their diaries unknown to historians. These diaries are important as they could be considered as chronicles of Lithuanians’ activities in emigration and represent certain ideological positions.
