Summary/Abstract: Article translated by S. Hattersley. The issue of Czech-Slovak relations was one of the most frequent topics in Czech and Slovak historiography in the past. This is also the case for the late 19th and early 20th century, when the earlier ideological trends towards ‘Czechoslovak reciprocity’and the ensuing demands for cultural and economic collaboration between Czechs and Slovaks were revived. Historical research has dealt with innumerable aspects of Czech-Slovak relations before the First World War but has so far paid hardly any attention to ideas concerning the cultural ‘dissimilarity’ of groups against which Czech and Slovak – or ‘Czechoslovak’– nationalism defined itself.
