Summary/Abstract: This article analyses different forms of the “move towards the West” throughout five hundred years of Brazilian history. This is a complex cultural phenomenon where the echoes of the myth of terrestrial paradise reverberate, and to which the myth of the end of the world is sometimes added. This overview is not exhaustive but testifies to the alternating movement between institutional rationalisations of the myth and its degradation, or between the successive phases of the disenchantment and of the re-enchantment of the world.
