Summary/Abstract: Beginning with Maus, the graphic novel on the experience(s) of the Holocaust, its memory and the son-father relationship, which made Art Spiegelman famous beyond the comic art world, the author analyses his next comic book, In the Shadow of No Towers, dedicated to 9/11. The interpretation concentrates on the distorted structure of time in the narrative, on the protagonist’s historical experience, on materiality of this resistant visual and on textual work which seems to resist the dominant discourses and ideologies of trauma which in the aftermath of 9/11 have lead to political actions and the transformation of collective identity of the Americans. Detailed discussion of Spiegelman’s artistic strategy serves to highlight some new ways for realism in the face of the global historical and political event, recorded and transmitted live.
