Summary/Abstract: This essay discusses the work of a well-known and highly regarded artist of Czech origin, currently living in Sweden – Katerina Mistal, and in particular her Fear of Landscape series. Mistal’s series is an attempt to reconstruct a story, a tale told through photographs, whose characters could be the modern descendants of the romantic heroes of Caspar David Friedrich, but equally well – figures from the Scandinavian crime fiction of Henning Mankell. The crime story trope opens the way to reflection on the popularity of Scandinavian crime novels in Poland. The classic philosophical question, ‘where does evil come from?’, a question to which we cannot find an answer, leads us to consider our place in society, and, in addition, reinforces the anxiety we feel about everyday events.
