Summary/Abstract: The Expression Category and the Creation of a New Linguistic Discipline: Stylistics (Charles Bally, 1865 - 1947). The aim of the present article is to highlight the relevance of the expression category to the process giving birth to stylistics as an autonomous linguistic discipline. While trying to create a descriptive synchronic linguistics based on the examination of the spoken language in context, Charles Bally brings about a linguistic theory (known as “the theoretical science of the expression” or stylistics) which both integrates and transcends other linguistic disciplines, such as lexicology, semantics, syntax and even phonetics. Our hypothesis is that this new approach has aroused the interest of the Discourse Analysis proponents due to its developing of a set of theoretical principles and some analytical interpretations of the spoken language - interpretations to be found later on in a common ground to various researches in the Discourse Analysis field.
