Summary/Abstract: Does this vision about the end of the nation state really work for south-east Europe? This article will try to give an answer to this question. It analyses the relationship between ethnic and cultural diversity and democratic consolidation in south-east Europe as a means for European Integration. It will also focus on issues of inter-ethnic reconciliation after the turmoil of the last decade. In fact, the history of south-east Europe, especially in the last century, is a history of failed reconciliation. Thus, reconciliation is the task both of today and tomorrow in order to escape the cycle of violence that has dominated the region’s history since the crumbling of the Hapsburg and the Ottoman empires. It is an imminent concern and a significant challenge to a united Europe.
