Summary/Abstract: The focus is on a ran ge of issues related to comparative analyses pertaining to surveys. The author looks at the methodology of comparative questionnaire studies of borderlands. Drawing on empirical findings of the Polish General Social Survey and Lubuskie Social Survey, the author verifies statements on the requisite measurement equivalence of the explained variable (a projection of the Polish identity in this case) and the impact of the explanatory variable i.e. the borderland effect. Based on the analysis of research findings, the differences between Poland’s centre and borderlands have been explored. Furthermore, the author formulates broader methodological assumptions about the essential and sufficient grounds for comparative survey studies.
