Summary/Abstract: The authors compare two groups of pupils attending Polish schools in two towns located in the former Poland’s Eastern Borderlands: Šalčininkai (Lithuania) and Horodok (Ukraine). The data were collected using two types of questionnaires. Responses of nationality and descent, mother tongue, prestige language and situational usage as well as knowledge of particular languages were compared on the basis of the data drawn from the sociolinguistic questionnaire. The usage questionnaire concerned the kinship terminology. The following vocabulary strata registered in Šalčininkai and Horodok have been differentiated and compared: Polish standard words, defective-corrupted words, Polish words used in the wrong meaning, Eastern Borderlands regionalisms and loanwords. The research shows difficulties in the formation of verbal and morphological competence of the pupils of the Polish schools in the two areas.
